Background

Our team partnered with Dot Labs, a healthcare startup selling the first definitive, non-invasive test to diagnose Endometriosis. We designed a website that could introduce their product and brand as well as provide a platform to sell it.

Our primary purpose in this project was to showcase this innovative diagnostic tool as well as foster an experience that would be both edifying and supportive for potential patients.

How might we create a brand and website that best conveys support and information?

User Research

In the process of reading medical and news articles on endometriosis, it became increasingly apparent that many women found the current experience of being diagnosed with endometriosis wrought with doctors minimizing their symptoms, expensive procedures, and years without a diagnosis.

The primary goal of our research was to best understand two aspects of the experience of women who may feel like they have endometriosis:
1. Their experience with medical professionals
2. Their interactions with medical diagnostic and treatment websites

We conducted research using an online survey. This method was preferrable to in-person interviews since it allowed us to ask questions to over a hundred women with endometriosis whilst giving them anonymity.

Insights

We found that women who had either been diagnosed with endometriosis or were actively seeking a diagnosis had the following shared experiences:

1. Not being heard by medical professionals
2. Confusion over misinformation about endometriosis found on the internet
3. Use of mainstream diagnostic sites, but fact checking with their doctors or medical journals
4. Use of online groups or forums to build a sense of community with others who had been diagnosed

User Profiles

Persona 1: Young woman who doesn't know what endometriosis is but has symptoms
Goal: Find out information about endometriosis, learn about resources, find out the pros and cons of different testing options.

Persona 2: Older woman who has suspected that she has endometriosis, talked to doctors about it but has been dismissed
Goal: Wants to get diagnosed for endometriosis and learn about resources

Persona 3: Practicing doctor
Goal: Learn more about Dot Labs' diagnosis proceedure, contact Dot Labs to acquire blood tests, wants information for insurance companies

Objectives

We used our research insights and user profiles to devlope the following objectives:
1. Emphasize ease and speed of results
2. Explain the science behind the test
3. Create a welcoming atmosphere
4. Continue to foster community

Design System & User Flow

We developed a color scheme using yellow, the ribbon color for endometriosis.

After speaking with the client and looking at the insights we drew, we established a general user flow:

Implementation

Below are a few of the final screens we delivered.

Over the summer, Stephanie Tang, Grant Kalasky, and I helped code the site using HTML/CSS.
